Paintings

The latest area of artistic expression has been that of painting. I had never tried it, yet always wanted to. It is still too early to tell, as I am poking around in the dark so to speak, but I hope to develop my execution.

The adventure for me in this latest artistic outlet is that it is not as exacting as pen and ink, and certainly not as much as computer modeling and rendering. Painting is much more free flow and atmosphere based for me than technical at this point. This aspect of the painting is exactly what I have been going for. For most of my life I have developed some techniques around accuracy in an illustrative medium. I have been away from drawing for several years hoping all the while that it would divorce my thinking from the technical aspects. Upon re-approaching art I had hoped to be capable of capturing more pure feeling, character, atmosphere, or emotion than mere technical accuracy. I’m glad to report that I feel that this is what is happening. The creation of the paintings goes a bit more slowly than a line drawing, but so far I have only had one disappointment.

Ironically I am at the same time as painting doing the most 3-D computer art ever. I have been working at the extreme opposite ends of the graphic spectrum simultaneously.

Subject-wise it is the familiar. There is not that great a difference from age 8 to age 38 in this respect, and it gives me a chuckle. The great thing is that I am working at painting with composition and color at the front of my mind. It seems I like big red moody skies.

The work so far has been done in acrylics on 16” by 20” canvas. Simple, affordable, and instantly hangable. It’s really been the most fun I’ve had in quite awhile. Enjoy.
