MACHINES OF LEGEND - Visions of Victorian Super Technology

The next group of work represents a project worked on primarily through the summer of 2005. I call it “The Machines of Legend” series. I have a fascination with steam era technologies being applied to endeavors beyond the scope of the times. The idea that in a Victorian era, minds would conceive of technologies enabling men to plunge to the bottom of the sea, reach the moon, or bend the laws of time itself send my mind spiraling. Of course whenever my mind is engaged, it is not long after that some graphic representation must follow.

Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated completely with the literary works of such authors as H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. As a youth, I was particularly drawn to the idea of the incredible machines the characters used to conquer the land, sea, air, other worlds, mankind, and even the nature of time itself. Keeping in mind these writers were often foretelling real machines to come a hundred years before the fact makes these tales all the more amazing!

These are my personal interpretations of these amazing inventions. Some ideas are inspired by the literary descriptions or film versions, yet others are completely new interpretations by me alone. The vast majority of these renderings are created with 3-D computer rendering art, however you may find the odd pencil sketch or ink layout of a vehicle here or there. These are the machines of legend; The magnificent Time Machine of 1895, The War of the Worlds martian war machines of 1898, or the mighty Nautilus submarine from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea of 1870!
